Adalbert Connor, a beloved family man and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on November 10, 2024, at the Veteran’s Home of California Chula Vista, at the age of 103. Born on October 8, 1921, in Yuma, Arizona, Adalbert’s life was a testament to resilience, warmth, and an unwavering spirit that touched all who knew him.
Adalbert spent his early years in Yuma, attending local schools and graduating from high school in 1941. His passion for learning led him to Arizona State University’s Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College and later to San Diego State University where he graduated in June 1954.
In 1942, Adalbert enlisted in the United States Army. He trained at Camp Roberts, Fort Lewis, and Fort Ord, and served valiantly in World War II, participating in multiple beach landings in the East Indies, including Leyte, Luzon, and Japan. Rising to the rank of sergeant, he returned home in 1946 with immense pride in his service to his country.
On March 31, 1951, Adalbert married Ann Marie Warner. Together, they raised three sons—Richard Del Connor, David James Connor, and Thomas Alan Connor—forming a family bonded by love and shared values. Adalbert was a devoted father, known for his wisdom, gentle spirit, and his lifelong friendship with his sons, who carry forward his legacy of kindness, strength, and integrity. His love and guidance also enriched the lives of his grandchildren: David James, Samantha, Kyle, Nicole, Shane, Caitlin, and Rory, and his great-grandchildren: Vivian, Vira and Shilo, all of whom remember him for his boundless warmth and captivating stories.
Adalbert’s intelligence and charm were unforgettable; he possessed an extraordinary memory and was a gifted storyteller, sharing tales of his life’s adventures that will be cherished for generations. He embraced life fully, with a love for tennis, singing, walking and thoughtful conversation, always there to listen with genuine empathy and interest.
Remaining close to his extended family, Adalbert treasured his connections with nieces and nephews Ava O'Connor, Maggie Hoodie Connor, Danny Connor, Tim Connor, Tim Davis, and Sandy Davis. His daughters-in-law, Kim Connor, Kare Connor, and Patty Cohen, were also beloved members of his life.
Adalbert had an extraordinary gift for connection, making friends wherever he went. Known for his remarkable memory, he could recall not only names but also the small, meaningful details of people’s lives—whether it was a grandchild’s recent accomplishment, a beloved pet’s name, or a special anniversary. This genuine interest in others endeared him to everyone he met, creating bonds that transcended age or background. His warmth and ability to make each person feel valued made every interaction memorable, leaving a lasting impact on countless lives. Adalbert’s friendships were woven with thoughtfulness and care, enriching his life and the lives of all who had the fortune to know him.
Adalbert’s life was one of accomplishment, loyalty, and boundless love. He took deep pride in his service to his country and his role as a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, leaving a legacy of family, friendship, and dedication that will resonate for generations.
A graveside service to honor Adalbert’s remarkable life will be held on November 21, 2024, at Miramar National Cemetery in San Diego, California. Family and friends are invited to gather to celebrate this quintessential family man, whose spirit and love will forever inspire those he left behind.
