Alberta “Bobbi” Rose Holmberg was born to Victoria and Albert Sweezey in Fort Kent, Maine on September 20, 1936. Albert had recently retired from the Navy and he and Vicki moved to his home town of Fort Kent. When the snow melted the following spring the family was back in San Diego because Vicki, a California girl, refused to live through another Maine winter.

Bobbi grew up in Normal Heights in a little white house at 34th and Copley. When she was seven her little sister Alice was born and the family was complete. Bobbi went to Horace Mann Junior High and Hoover Higher School. Bobbi was active in Jobs Daughters, was in the drill team, the year book staff, member of CSF, swim club and the booster club in high school. Her favorite class as a senior was shorthand, a skill she kept up all of her life. She graduated from Hoover High School in 1954.

Bobbi met her husband Marvin Holmberg on a blind date, set up by his friend Gene Hastings. Bobbi knew of Marv as that silly Holmberg boy that lived down the street and drove too fast in hot rod cars, but a few years later decided he was okay after all. They were married August 31, 1956 and spent their short honeymoon at Marine Land and the newly opened Disneyland.

In 1960 their first daughter Janet was born, followed by Pamela in 1963. The family moved to Allied Gardens in 1961 and lived on the corner of Delano Avenue for almost 60 years, until Bobbi sold the house in 2018. In 2018 Bobbi moved to Lantern Crest in Santee and loved her apartment and friends there. She lived at Lantern Crest until her health took a turn for the worse and she moved to Del Cerro Manor in 2023 until her passing.

Bobbi worked at a local bank after graduation from high school, where her main job was helping people balance their checkbooks, a habit Bobbi kept up until the end of her life. She also worked at General Dynamics until her pregnancy with Janet. In the late 70s she went back to work, first at Lapidary Journal, then about 18 years at General Dynamics as an Executive Secretary.

When Janet and Pam were growing up she was active in PTA, church groups, and Camp Fire. She loved to sew and made many of the girl’s clothes, and always had something good cooking or baking.

Bobbi was a 50 plus year member of Normal Heights/Harbor Lights Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star. In 1972 she joined the line at Normal Heights Chapter, serving as Worthy Matron in 1976 She also served as Deputy Grand Matron in 1996. She traveled with Marv when he was the Grand Rep from CA to Nova Scotia. She also filled several other offices in Eastern Star. She joined Daughters of the Nile and was an active member, serving as secretary. Bobbi loved her Masonic family and spent many happy days and nights taking part in activities. Bobbi was the Kangaroo lady in the early 70s and Queen of the Quillows in the aughts – almost everyone who knew Bobbi had a quillow (or two) and you would find her and her table of quillows at meetings, breakfasts, and dinners.

Bobbi visited all of the 50 states of the US, and after retirement she and Marv would get in the car and take road trips for weeks at a time. They also visited Canada, Sweden, Australia, New Zealand, England, Spain, and Russia.

Bobbi was a huge Padre fan, born and raised. She took the streetcar to Lane Field to watch games as a child. One of Pam and Janet’s fond memories of Bobbi is going to Padre games at Jack Murphy Stadium with Bobbi and Vicki, both of them keeping score. Her all time favorite Padre is probably Tony Gwynn, but her recent favorite was Jurikson Profar – she loved his smile. You always knew where Bobbi was at game time – in front of her TV watching intently. Her family is disappointed the Padres haven’t won a World Series for her yet.
