Anna Gale Johnson Schmidtmann, daughter of Dale Elwood Johnson and Pearl Edythe Palmquist Johnson, was born September 19, 1949 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She went to be with her Lord and Savior on August 30, 2025 at the age of 75. Anna Gale’s funeral service and celebration of life will be held on September 12.

Anna Gale grew up on the family farm and attended country school and church. She learned to play piano and had over 50 first cousins. She attended Canova High School and graduated from University of Sioux Falls, she was a homecoming queen and cheerleader. She met Warren Schmidtmann in 1970 and they fell in love and married at Sun Prairie Baptist Church on November 27, 1971, they were married for 53 years. They moved to Iowa, where Anna Gale taught 4th grade. Later when they moved to San Diego, her career spanned teaching, assisting, and mentoring students as an AVID instructor. Anna Gale had a gift for making children feel loved and protected. Warren and Anna Gale started their own family in 1973. Family was the most important thing to her. They did a lot of camping and visiting family and friends and spent time on the farm where Anna Gale grew up. Anna Gale’s warmth touched everyone she came in contact with. She loved her grandchildren more than anything. She and Warren enjoyed sailing, camping and jeeping for many years, as well as riding their bicycles along the Embarcadero together.

Anna Gale had a cheery, bright and loving nature. She would light up a room with her smile. She made people feel special and loved. She will be missed dearly.

She is survived by her husband, Warren Schmidtmann, 3 children, Erik (Julie) Schmidtmann, Jesse (Amanda) Schmidtmann, Amber (Alex) Barrett, sister and brother, Delora (Doug) Sims, and Roger (Teresa) Johnson; grandchildren, Rowan and Sienna Barrett; Willa and Hannah Schmidtmann; step grandchildren and step great-grandchild, Jaelyn, Winston, and Ace; and sister-in-law Vickie (Allen) Schmidtmann Logston; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents, baby sister Louise, her in-laws Victor and Agnes “Pat” Schmidtmann, and step granddaughter Kendra.
