Denise Joyce Hernandez (Gonzales) was born on November 3, 1952, to proud parents Joyce Clara Mondaca and Jose de Jesus Gonzales in the vibrant city of San Diego, California. Their love and dedication to family blossomed into a life filled with compassion and harmony, raising Denise alongside her three sisters, Karen, Elizabeth, and Joanne, in the charming community of Lemon Grove. Denise’s spirit shone brightly as a proud Matador at Mount Miguel High School, where she captivated audiences as one of the school mascot dancers.

Denise's legacy continues through her loving family. She is survived by her beloved sisters, Karen Pontsler, Elizabeth Durgin, and Joanne Russell, whose bonds enriched her life immeasurably. Karen’s son, Anthony, treasured the moments spent with his Aunt Denise, and her great-grand niece and nephew, Olivia and Kai, held a special place in her heart. Elizabeth’s daughter Lindsy, also shared cherished memories with Denise, reinforcing the love that flourished within the family.

As a devoted mother, Denise took great pride in her two daughters, each unique and exceptional. Sarah Andrea Hernandez, born on October 1, 1978, brought into the world the joys of grandmotherhood with her sons, Mateo Antonio Chavez and Jimi Red Thunder Rodriguez. Amy Joyce Knox (Hernandez), born on July 24, 1980, also gifted Denise with her adorable granddaughter, Mia Joyce Ketchum.

Denise's professional journey was marked by her unwavering commitment to social services and education. She served as a special education instructor for the Spring Valley School District and as an aide for Alpine Union School District, touching the lives of countless students. At the Workforce Partnership of San Diego, Denise made significant contributions as a Career Technician and later as a Career Counselor at the East County Career Center, previously the Career Development Center. Her passion for uplifting others was evident, as she believed in treating everyone with utmost respect and kindness, guiding them to discover their potential.

In her retirement, Denise embraced new adventures as a Mary Kay Lady and enjoyed delightful afternoons thrift store shopping with her cherished friends from the retirement community. Her passions included music, her family's laughter, and the joy of decorating with western and native themes. Her vibrant jewelry collection boasted exquisite turquoise and gems, reflecting her love for beauty and elegance. She found joy in dressing to the nines, creating unforgettable memories through dance, whether it was to the tunes of Merle Haggard, Luther Vandross, or The Pointer Sisters.

Denise Joyce Hernandez leaves behind a legacy of love, light, and unwavering grace. Her spirit will forever remain in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her.
