Donald Blanchard was born on December 3, 1949 in Houston, Texas, to his late parents, Paul Blanchard and Dorothy Mae Davis. After high school he was inducted into the Army and served until 1972, and was stationed for a time in Germany. He decided to continue his service to his country in a different branch of service, and joined the Navy and served until 1978. While stationed in San Diego he met his wife Cici and they married on July 28, 1976.

Following his service he attended college and wanted to do something in the arts field since he had enjoyed drawing and painting during high school. He became a technical illustrator working on many complex technical manuals, and enjoyed that career for the next 24 years.

After receiving a camera as a gift, he expanded his artistic expression by creating black and white photographs that he developed and printed in his home based darkroom. He and Cici took many trips together so Don could photograph specific places and expand his portfolio. They visited San Francisco multiple times as he wanted just the right photograph of the Golden Gate Bridge, which he did finally achieve.

Don’s photography was shown at many shows throughout San Diego and he sold his pieces at the Escondido Municipal Gallery among other places in San Diego.  His photography was under the name Dok Blanchard. The name came from a famous football player named Doc Blanchard. The C was changed to a K for Kelvin. The Kelvin scale is a crucial tool for artists and designers when it comes to selecting the right lighting for their work.

Donald Blanchard is survived by his wife Cici Blanchard, brothers Roy Blanchard, Bobby Blanchard, sister-in-law Deborah Blanchard, and sisters Helen Blanchard and Tracy Freeman, brother-in-law Carl Freeman, Jr.

A private memorial service will be planned for a later date. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your favorite charity in Don’s memory.

Don will forever be remembered for his quiet, unassuming nature, and the beautiful, touching photography he created with his dedication to the arts.
