Ellen was born on December 16th, 1941, in Montreal, Canada, the only child of Julia & Irvine Parker. She was baptized, Mary Ellen Alice Parker but chose to go by the abbreviated “Ellen”. She attended grade school, commercial school, and Saint Mary’s Hospital School of Nursing in Montreal. Ellen met Ray Haine, an Englishman and maritime architect, who was working in Montreal. When Ray transferred to San Diego, Ellen followed the love of her life. They married on April 22, 1972, and settled in their home at 3535 Buena Vista Street in Crown Point. Although they did not have children, they did have Muffin, an overgrown English Sheep Dog. Ellen was a Registered Nurse who worked in several hospitals and physician’s offices throughout her nursing career. Her patients and coworkers were blessed by her caring spirit.
Upon Ray’s retirement, they hiked and camped across the United States and Canada. They also enjoyed traveling and cruises to many countries throughout the world. They traveled to England numerous times to visit Ray’s homeland and his relatives.
Besides traveling, they took up clogging with annual performances at the Del Mar Fair. They both had beautiful voices and sang in several choral groups, even performing at Carnegie Hall in New York City. After Ray’s death, Ellen joined the choir at Saint Brigid where she sang for years. Sundays were filled with worship, song, and then breakfast with wonderful friends from Saint Brigid. Ellen enjoyed playing Bunco with her Crown Point neighbors. She also enjoyed going out to dinner with a group of friends before ushering at her favorite Lamb’s Players Theatre in Coronado and other theaters throughout San Diego. Ellen was also a season patron of the San Diego Opera enjoying many beautiful performances.
Ellen was a member of the Saint Brigid Connection-to-Christ ladies’ group, where lifetime friendships were made while growing closer in relationship to Jesus Christ. These friends helped Ellen move from her longtime home to supportive living at Oakmont in Pacific Beach. As Ellen’s Alzeheimer’s progressed, she moved to The Summer House memory care residential cottages at Wesley Palms. Ellen loved to sing and dance, and at the Summer House she enjoyed the variety of activities, being with the other residents, and the company of the amazing caregivers. Throughout the debilitating progression of Alzheimer’s Disease, Ellen always maintained her beautiful smile and laughter. When unable to talk, she would attempt to pray a few words of the Rosary. Ellen had a special devotion to The Chaplet of Divine Mercy, singing The Chaplet every Thursday afternoon with the others at Saint Brigid.
Ellen had a huge, charitable heart! She participated annually in the Saint Brigid food packaging events which morphed into the annual Million Meal food packaging events. Every year she helped sort and package tons of Halloween candy which is then transported to the Casa de los Pobres (House of the Poor) in Tijuana for the Franciscan Sister’s Christmas food, clothing, and toy distribution. At Saint Brigid, Ellen was the coffee maker for the Neighbor’s in Need dinners.
Being true to her generosity and love for The Chaplet of Divine Mercy, donations may be made in Ellen’s honor to: Friends of Divine Mercy, c/o Paul DeMartini, 2404 Casement Street, San Diego, CA 92123-3922.
