Gary Glenn Hogue, a man of remarkable integrity and dedication, passed away on October 26, 2025, in La Mesa, California, at the age of 76. Born on November 24, 1948, in Daytona Beach, Florida, Gary’s journey through life was distinguished by his unwavering commitment to service, education and spiritual growth.
A proud veteran, Gary initially served in the U.S. Air Force and later served as a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy for a total of 26 years. His specialization was in ordnance and he earned the prestigious title of Sailor of the Year, alongside numerous Meritorious commendation metals that reflected his expertise and leadership in the military. While his career afforded Gary exciting experiences across the globe, he chose to serve his last years of service in San Diego in order to remain close to his beloved sons, Shawn and Scott.
Following his stellar Navy career, Gary transitioned into education, taking on the role of Administrator for the Sweetwater Unified School District. In this capacity, he oversaw the Adult Education programs of four high schools, demonstrating a passion for facilitating growth and learning in others. Gary’s dedication to nurturing potential was matched only by his educational accomplishments, which included a Bachelor of Arts and a Master’s degree in Organizational Design—all pursued during his military service.
Beyond his professional achievements, Gary’s life was rich with personal passions. He relished moments spent fishing and playing golf with his sons and watching football. He was an avid reader, often immersing himself in the pages of mystery and thriller novels. He enjoyed improving his Poker skills and he developed many friendships at the local casino. Gary’s most dedicated pursuits, however, lay in his spiritual teachings, which not only fostered his positive and loving attitude but also created a lasting impact on those fortunate enough to know him. His discipline in meditation for over 30 years was a cornerstone of his daily routine, a cherished practice he referred to as his "time with God". Gary lived with an extraordinary balance of discipline and inner strength as well as a compassionate heart.
After four years of living with Parkinson's Disease, Gary succumbed to colon cancer. His battle was emblematic of his character in facing adversity with courage, resilience and kindness until the very end.
Gary is survived by his adoring wife, Esther Hogue, and his two sons, Shawn and Scott. His legacy endures through the love and memories shared with his three sisters, Donna Weaver, Karen Kiefer, and Debra Dunaway Hall. He is preceded in death by his parents Dorothy and Bill Hogue.
Friends and family who were touched by Gary's kindness and wisdom will gather to celebrate his extraordinary life. A funeral service will be held on November 18, 2025, at Featheringill Mortuary in San Diego, California, commencing at 11:00 AM. Following the service, the burial will take place at Miramar National Cemetery.
In honor of a man who dedicated his life to serving others, Gary Hogue will be remembered as a devoted husband, a loving father, a cherished brother, and a friend to many, whose positive spirit will continue to resonate in the hearts of those who knew him.
