Listen to Obituary

Gary Lee Mathis, 67, of San Diego, passed away unexpectedly in his sleep on August 27, 2025, at home.

Born on November 27, 1957, in San Diego to Eleanor Lillian Seppi and Charles Hudson Mathis, Gary grew up alongside his sister, Patricia “Patti” Mathis Miller. He attended Crawford High School and San Diego State University, returning several times to continue his education in computer programming.

Gary began his career in public service as a reservist with the San Diego Sheriff’s Department before transitioning into the automotive industry, where he started as a parts driver and worked his way up to parts and operations manager. Later, he pursued his passion for technology, moving into software development for automotive sales. In 2016, he retired to devote his time and care to his beloved mother.

Gary lived a full and adventurous life. As a teenager, he was active in DeMolay and later became a proud member of the San Diego Free Masons, the NRA, and local shooting groups. His hobbies and passions included woodworking, golfing, baseball, running, cooking, baking, traveling, NASCAR, and, true to his nature, “all things fast.”

He will be remembered for his quick wit and humor that often landed him in trouble, his thrill-seeking spirit, and his endless conversations with anyone willing to listen. Known for wearing shorts year-round, Gary had a larger-than-life personality, a deep well of knowledge, and a generous heart—especially evident in the devoted care he gave his mother in her later years.

Gary is survived by his mother, Eleanor; sister, Patti; daughters, Heather Christine Mathis Culver and Laura Elizabeth Mathis Davis; and his granddaughters, Jayden Skye, Addison Taylor, Arya Starr, and Willow Storm.

No service will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Gary’s honor to your local cardiac center or Masonic organization.

He will be deeply missed, but his humor and love live on in his family forever. Fly fast.
