Hugh Barnhill, 88, of El Cajon, California, passed away peacefully at home on March 23, 2026, surrounded by love.
Hugh was born on May 25, 1937, in Wenatchee, Washington, and spent his early years in Spokane, where he attended North Central High School and built lifelong friendships that he cherished deeply. He later lived in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, before making San Diego his home in 1975 - a place he would proudly call home for the next 50 years.
Hugh was known for his kind heart, easygoing nature, and genuine love for people. He built a successful career as a Territory Manager with the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), where he formed lasting relationships and earned the respect of colleagues and clients alike.
He had a lifelong passion for automobiles and was known for owning many exceptional cars over the years - each one cared for with pride and enthusiasm. His love for cars extended beyond ownership, as he also volunteered at the San Diego Automotive Museum, where he enjoyed sharing that passion with others.
Sports were a central part of Hugh’s life, especially his unwavering devotion to the San Diego Padres and his love of college basketball. A Padres season ticket holder for more than 20 years, he rarely missed a game and shared his love of baseball with his daughter, creating memories that will be cherished forever. He looked forward to each new season with the excitement of a true fan.
Hugh shared 57 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Sue Barnhill, who passed away in 2020. In recent years, he found love again with his loving companion and partner of five years, Sue Ehrhardt. Together, they created many special memories, traveling the world and enjoying life’s simple pleasures at home.
Above all, Hugh was devoted to his family. He is survived by his children, Terry Barnhill and Julie Wainer (Bill Wainer and Kelly Haas); his grandchildren, Chad Barnhill, Morgan Ervin, and Taylor Phillips; and his great-grandchildren, Zoey, Calvin, and Rayne. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, April 25, at 11am - Carlton Oaks Country Club (Santee, CA).
Please join us as we honor and celebrate the wonderful moments of his life, sharing stories, laughter, and the memories that made him so special.
