John Joseph Berlin II

January 29, 1948 — September 2, 2022

John Joseph Berlin II, 74, died in his home September 2, 2022, surrounded by his family. He
was the husband of Janet K. (Harvey) Berlin, to whom he had been married for 54 years in
February. John was born in San Diego, California – the first born of Opal Jo (Dotson) Berlin and
John Berlin. The family moved to Yuma, Arizona when he was a child, and he attended Kofa
High School, where he met Janet. Once graduated from Kofa, he began Arizona Western
College as a music major. 1n 1967, he joined the United States Navy and was in the Drum and
Bugle Corps at San Diego Naval Training Center. After serving at Naval Air Station Alameda, he
was deployed to the Mediterranean Gulf during the Vietnam War on the aircraft carrier USS
Independence CVA-62. His service with the Navy completed, John then studied and graduated
from San Diego State University with a Bachelors of Arts, the first in his family to do so. After
graduation, he worked for the federal government in various capacities, and retired from
SPAWAR in June 2007.

John was a dedicated volunteer with Chollas Lake Little League, Y Indian Guides, and Crawford
High School Aquatics. He was generous with his time, with the community and his friends. He
was a self-taught plumber, electrician, carpenter, and auto mechanic, and he never met a dog
he didn’t befriend. He was a devoted Padres fan, and thought the world of his children and
grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Janet, of San Diego; his son, Jeffrey M. Berlin of
Freestone, CA; grandson Emmet Berlin of Silverdale, WA; grandson Forrest Berlin of San
Francisco, CA; grandson Arlo Berlin of Pleasant Hill, CA; his daughter, Amy E. Berlin and her
husband Kevin Manley, of San Diego, CA; granddaughters Georgia Wren Manley and Diana
Manley of San Diego, CA; his brother, Robert T. Lightle of Yuma, AZ; niece, Christine A. Weber
of Yuma, AZ; his grand-nephew, Levi Orduño of Yuma, AZ; and Shaun McCarron, nephew by
choice, of South Beach, OR. John was predeceased by two brothers, James E. Berlin and
William H. Berlin, both of Yuma, AZ.
