John Ramsey Bilbrey

February 15, 1947 — November 28, 2024

San Diego

John Ramsey Bilbrey, fondly known as Johnny, passed away peacefully at home on November 28 2024, at the age of 77. Born on February 15, 1947, in San Diego, California, John was a proud member of the San Diego community throughout his life.

His early career began as a paper boy for the San Diego Union, an experience that led him to an extraordinary act of bravery when he saved a family from a house fire while delivering newspapers. This remarkable deed earned him the key to the city, which remains a cherished reminder of his heroism. Following this, John served four years in the United States Air Force, completing two tours in Vietnam as a Medical Specialist, where he received the Expert Marksmanship Ribbon among other commendations.

After his military service, John took on various roles throughout his life, including working as an E.R. Technician in San Diego, a volunteer fireman, and even contributing to the magic of Disney World on the ride “It’s a Small World,” a song he humorously vowed never to listen to again. His adventurous spirit led him to drive big rigs, hauling produce across the country and sharing thrilling tales, such as driving through a severe snowstorm in Chicago. John also worked for IBM as a typewriter repairman, eventually finding his way to the San Diego Union-Tribune, where he became a valued member of their Production Department. He retired after 30 dedicated years as a Senior Production Machinist. Following his retirement he continued to serve his community through his work with the Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA). He proudly served as Secretary for his local VVA, Chapter #472, before being elected to serve as Secretary for the VVA State of California, representing his community at a National level.

John was a man of many interests. He had a lifelong passion for cars, nurtured from a young age. His father fondly recalled a story of John dismantling and reassembling his mother's car at just nine years old. As a devoted movie-watcher, John could always be counted on to identify the make, model, and year of every vehicle on screen. He also loved the tranquility of fishing, often visiting spots such as Lake Cuyamaca, where a proud photograph of him with a weighty two-pound rainbow trout adorns the wall.

John leaves behind his wife of forty years, Kathy Bilbrey, his daughter Malissa Bilbrey (Muffin), and his brother Mark David Bilbrey. He is predeceased by his father, John Elmer Bilbrey, and mother, Doris Agatha Bilbrey.

Johnny will be remembered not only for his varied and remarkable career but also for his courage, love for family, and boundless enthusiasm for life. He touched many lives and will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Johnny's service will be held on Friday December 20th, 2024 at 3p at the Miramar National Cemetery.
