Josephine Annette Cota, affectionately known as Joann, was born on January 1, 1955, in San Diego, California. She departed this life on August 2, 2024, at Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego, havingely battled numerous chronic illnesses. Throughout her days, Joann's spirit shone brightly in the culinary world, where her incredible cooking left an indelible mark on those fortunate enough to share her meals. She dedicated a significant part of her career to Beer King, demonstrating a remarkable work ethic and a commitment to her profession.
Joann's love for family was palpable, especially during the holidays when she cherished gatherings filled with laughter and love. A highlight during these times was the tradition of making tamales, a practice that brought family members together and created memories that would last for generations. She possessed a warm, inviting personality; although she may not have had much to give materially, she was a wonderful listener who delighted in light-hearted conversations, often sharing affectionate banter about those around her.
Joann’s deep affection for her dog, Zoey, brought her immense joy, particularly following the passing of her beloved daughter, Dacia Thomas, on September 7, 2023. After Dacia’s death, Zoey became her steadfast companion, symbolizing a source of comfort and love.
She is survived by her devoted family: her mother, Emma Cota; her son, Maurice Thomas; her brothers, Richard and John Cota; her sister-in-law and best friend, Kathy Cota; and her beloved niece, Rosalie. The loss of Joann is deeply felt by her family and friends, who will forever remember her for her kindness, resilience, and the countless cherished moments they shared.
As we reflect on Joann's life, it is evident that her legacy will endure through the love she gave, the recipes she shared, and the memories made in her company. We honor her memory and the impact she made on all who had the privilege to know her.
