Joyce Edgar

Listen to Obituary

Joyce Edgar passed peacefully at home on September 12, 2026, with her husband, David, by her side. She is now in the arms of God.

Somehow it seems fitting that Joyce chose National Policewomen’s Day as the day to begin her next adventure. After all, Joyce spent 30 years with the San Diego Police Department, becoming one of the early women in the department and a true pioneer for women in law enforcement. She worked her way from rookie to Lieutenant and even taught at the Police Academy. She opened doors for women who came after her and was always a champion for others.

Joyce was born November 6, 1949, in Berwyn, Illinois, to Ann and Norbert Gobeille. She was the middle child, survived by her brother Bob and sister Janet.

Joyce married David Edgar in October of 1970. Their courtship was unique—they had only seven official dates before getting married, along with years of letter writing that helped build their relationship.

Joyce and David raised three daughters, Stacy, Karen, and Marcy, and welcomed sons-in-laws, 7 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren. Family was Joyce’s greatest priority. She believed it was important to spend time together. She attended sporting events, performances, activities, and anything else her kids and grandkids were involved in. She loved seeing what everyone was doing and sharing pictures and videos with siblings, cousins, and extended family.

All around, Joyce was supportive. She encouraged people. She showed up. She helped. She connected people. She made plans. She believed in taking care of others and giving generously.

Joyce would want us to keep moving forward. Take the trip. Go to the show or game. Spend time with your family. Take care of your health. Help someone. Be generous. Keep your faith. Get your steps in. Take out the trash. And don't forget to enjoy the journey.

A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Martin of Tours Church and her ashes will be interred at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, Joyce would prefer that you keep up on your mammograms and take care of your own health, both physical and spiritual.

Joyce spent her life taking care of others. Now, it’s our turn to carry that forward.

Rest peacefully, Joyce. Your watch is over.
