The Life of Lorraine Wineteer
Lorraine was born in 1928 in the small town of Wellsford, Kansas. The youngest child of Haskell and Alberta Williams, she had an older sister June and older brother Dean. In 1942, Lorraine and her parents moved to San Diego, California, to be closer to June and Dean.
Lorraine attended Roosevelt Junior High and graduated from San Diego High School in 1946. While attending high school, Lorraine enjoyed skating and met a wonderful group of friends. The young ladies formed a social club called the Chez Amies (meaning among friends) and were active club members all of their lives.
Lorraine married Doyle Wineteer in 1948 but sadly the marriage did not last. She went on to marry Bill Burnham and had daughters Holly, Denise, and Carol. Lorraine and her daughters attended Palisades Presbyterian Church. When the girls were young teenagers, Lorraine and Bill split up and she was a single mom. Even when times were tough, she was always a strong, loving, and protective mother. Lorraine studied for the Civil Service exam and had a 22-year career with the San Diego County Municipal Court as a Deputy Clerk. She retired from the South Bay Court in 1987. As fate would have it, shortly before retirement Lorraine met up with Doyle again who was now a single father of five. This time around, things were different and they fell in love once again.
In 1993, Lorraine was blessed with her only grandchild, Kevin Robert, and he was the highlight of her life. She would do anything for Kevin and “Papa” Doyle was always there by her side.
Lorraine and Doyle remarried in 1995. Marrying Doyle may have been the best thing that ever happened to her and she inherited a wonderful new family. Lorraine and Doyle were an active couple and enjoyed many friends and family events. After so many happy years together, Lorraine sadly lost her husband Doyle in 2003.
After a period of adjustment, Lorraine became an active single lady once again. She was always very sociable and outgoing. She and her sister June traveled across the country visiting family in Kansas, Tennessee, and Wisconsin. They even took a trip to Hawaii. Lorraine loved attending all the family get-togethers and lunches with her club friends and retirement group. She had fun going to the Del Mar Fair several times every year and taking bus trips to Palm Springs. Lorraine was talented and creative and was the most beautiful seamstress ever. She enjoyed hosting holidays at her home and went all out with her Christmas decorations and Halloween open house.
Lorraine was a kind, generous, unselfish, and loving person to her family and everyone she knew. She took care of her aging mother before her passing, cared for Doyle when he was ill, and Holly when she was sick. As Lorraine got older and her health declined, her family took care of her just as she had always cared for them. With the help of dedicated caregivers, “Nurse” Carol and Ursula, she was always cared for in her home.
Lorraine passed peacefully into Eternal Life at age 96 on March 25, 2025.
She was preceded in death by her parents Haskell and Alberta, brother Dean, sister June, husband Doyle, daughter Holly, niece Sherry, nephew Greg, and stepson Tab.
Lorraine is survived by her daughter Denise (Mario), daughter Carol (Bob), grandson Kevin (Tara), great-granddaughter Reese, nieces and nephews Jan, Kellie, Rick, and Phil and their families. She is also survived by her stepchildren Dale (Deb), Kim (Glenn), Tami (Tony), and Teri (Scott) and their children and grandchildren.
Lorraine’s arrangements were handled by Featheringill Mortuary and her final resting place is with her husband Doyle at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego, California.
