Luther B. Lewis Jr. aka Bubby or Uncle Bub, age 86 of San Diego, passed away on Resurrection Sunday 7:30pm, April 5, 2026. He was born on December 21, 1939 in Dodge City, Kansas, the one son of (10) children of Luther B. Lewis and Victoria Jane Lewis (Bradshaw). Alberta Cooper, Delcie Roberts, Laura Foote, Dorothy Sullivan, Doris Jean Carter, Luther Jr., Gwendolyn Jackson, Lena Mae Grissom, Sharon Johnson, and Marilyn Kay Lewis. All have preceded him in death, except his older sister Dorothy Sullivan (90).
Luther was preceded in death by his oldest son, Michael Lewis (2025), and his youngest daughter, Gena Lynn Johnson (2000). Luther is survived by his daughter, Laura Louise Lewis (Don Caswell), and son, Darrell Dwayne Lewis (Kimberly Lewis). Grandchildren Tanisha Lewis, Rafzeem Johnson, Dejzenelle Lewis, Darrell Lewis Jr., Desiree Lewis, and Great Grandchildren Josiah Lewis (18), Zyrus Munn (12), Kahlani Lewis (7), Myles Tepper (5), Maverick Tepper (3 months).
Early on Luther was a member of the Church of God in Christ. Luther attended Dodge City HS, where he ran track. His mother was a bit overprotective of him, seeing that he was the only boy and the family had already lost another son before taking him home from the hospital. Luther felt smothered and needed to strike out on his own, so he moved to Colorado at 17. Not long after that, he moved to Los Angeles. Luther was an extremely gifted man. He could fix anything; he could watch for a while and do it. He held jobs as a welder, a chef, a mechanic, a construction worker, and too many others to name. He continuously furthered his education. After working many jobs and struggling from job to job with lay-offs, etc... Luther began his career at North Island's Naval Air Rework Facility in San Diego as a machinist. With his skills, work ethic, and willingness to continue his education, before long, Luther was an Engineering Technician supervising the making of parts for the military's aircraft. His son Darrell recalls hating to work on the car or anything that had to do with measurements, because we would work for hours to get things perfect. One 32nd of an inch may be tiny to us, but to a person who makes airplane parts for a living, this is unacceptable. My dad finally retired from North Island after 3o years of driving across that the Coronado Bay Bridge almost every day, six, sometimes seven times a week. He retired in 2002.
Luther was a good man. He wasn't nice, sweet, kind, or gentle by any means, but he was a good man. By the world's definition of Love, he would be found lacking. But by the scriptures' definition of Love, he was a loving man. Luther suffered long without complaining. And he would still give you the shirt off his back. He would take you in, feed you, and give you a place to stay. He would tell you how stupid you were or how ignorant you are, but you would have a shirt, food, and a place to stay. Luther called it as he saw it, and he saw it his own way, and if you and he didn't see it the same, you didn't know what the hell you were talking about. You had to learn to understand Luther's Love; you didn't feel it, but you got to enjoy it. He sacrificed so he would have enough to help you out if you were ever in need. Luther was a very wise man. He did what was right because it was right to do, period. He set a good example of being there no matter what. He worked hard without complaining. He was an example to all who had the pleasure of knowing him. He never held grudges, except maybe one, but I'll save that one for another time. He could take it as much as he could give it. Luther enjoyed Jazz and giving advice. He never met anyone he felt knew more than him. If he were to unknowingly entertain Jesus, I'm sure he would have plenty of advice for Him too. Lol
