Marjoree Maree Howard-Hartman, 89, a longtime resident of El Cajon, CA passed away peacefully on November 7, 2023 .
Margie was born in Lafayette, IN on September 5, 1934. She was the only child of Mabel Loreene Goss and Howard Rittenhouse Moore and spent most of her growing up years in Rossville IN. Margie earned her BS in Elementary Education at Ball State Teachers University, and her Masters in Elementary Education at the University of Colorado .
She moved to San Diego to pursue her teaching career where she met and married Dr. Richard Ian Howard on September 3, 1959. Together they raised two children, Sharon and Mark. They were married 34 years until Richard‘s death from cancer in 1992.
Years later she met Bernard E. Hartman and they married on January 15, 2011. For 20+ years they were inseparable, in travel, visiting family and friends, and enjoying mutual interests. She was his best friend and they made an amazing team.
Margie was involved in education from 1956 until 1985. She worked at Hardy Elementary, Birdrock Elementary, SDSU and a number of other educational institutions.
She was involved in numerous charitable, cultural and philanthropic organizations throughout San Diego East county. Her involvement in these organizations and clubs were a love and passion that spanned her entire life. She held many positions within her cherished causes. Some of these included: President of La Mesa Junior Women’s Club and Tempos, President of San Diego County Veterinary Medical Association Auxilliary, President of La Mesa AAUW, and Chairman of Women at the Well at Foothills United Methodist Church.
Margie was an avid reader and bridge player and enjoyed tennis (team captain at both Helix South and Singing Hills Tennis Clubs), golf and gourmet cooking among other interests.
Margie is survived by her beloved husband, Bernard Hartman, daughter Sharon Holbrook, son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Melissa Howard, grandsons Scott and Dylan, granddaughters, Michelle, Sarah, Melissa, and Grace, and great-grandson Connor, along with many other beloved family and friends.
On December 25,2023, Christmas Day, Margie’s beloved husband Bernie joined her in heaven
A Celebration of Lives will be held on January 13, 2024 At 2:00 pm with a reception to follow at Foodhills United Methodist Chuch, 4031 Avocado Blvd, La Mesa. Donations in her memory may be made to the La Mesa Women’s Club or Foothills United Methodist Church.
