Listen to Obituary

Mary Carol Marquette, age 78, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 8, 2025, surrounded by family. She leaves behind a legacy of love, humor, and devotion to family and friends that will be remembered by those who knew her.

Born in Chicago, Ill. on November 16, 1946, Mary grew up in the Bay Area and San Diego, Calif. She graduated high school from the Academy of Our Lady of Peace in 1964, and she earned a bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Dominican College of San Rafael in 1968, where she was active with the Irish Club and the Young Democrats.

After working in banking, she married first husband Tony Uribe in 1971, and they had two children, Kristin and Peter, during their marriage. While raising her kids, Mary was active with the Junior League of San Diego and the Parent Teacher Guild at Saint Therese Catholic School.

Mary returned to the workforce in the early 1990s, and she was active in San Diego’s Irish community. She made many friendships at local gathering spots like The Blarney Stone and The Ould Sod, hosted more than one “hooley” at her home, and met an eligible bachelor named John Marquette, whom she married in 1998. Mary and John spent nearly 30 happy years together, traveling to Ireland and Alaska, and they took many road trips to visit family in Nebraska, Arizona, and Los Angeles, Calif.

In the 2000s, Mary cared for her ailing mother, Sylvia. The grief of Sylvia’s death in October 2008 was tempered by the birth of Mary’s first grandchild, Melodie Jones, one week prior. Mary became a three-time grandmother with the births of granddaughters Faye Uribe in 2011 and Vivian Uribe in 2014. She adored her grandchildren, and she took great pride their growth and accomplishments.

Mary’s health declined over the past decade, but she maintained a keen interest in politics, reading, and most important to her, staying up to date on the latest developments with her family. She was a good friend and trusted adviser to her kids and grandkids, and her granddaughters fondly remember spending hours with “Nana” watching Disney shows like “Hannah Montana” and “Austin & Ally,” and reality shows like “Dance Moms” and “1,000 Lb. Sisters.”

Mary is predeceased by her parents, Edward “Tag” Tagwerker and Sylvia Tagwerker (nee Goblisch). She is survived by her husband John Marquette; daughter Kristin Uribe; son Peter Uribe (Paige); brothers Mark Tagwerker (Nancy) and Terry Tagwerker; granddaughters Melodie Jones, Faye Uribe, and Vivian Uribe; and former husband Tony Uribe (Rose).

Mary lived her faith quietly and with devotion. She had a servant’s heart, and she cared deeply for her family and friends. She was a pistol, and she is dearly missed.
