Nancy is finally home in the warm embrace of Jesus, greeted by her Marty, her Mama, 2 brothers, her sister and I’m sure a huge welcoming committee of all the friends she loved and laughed with on Earth.
Born to Leona and Charles Sickler, Nancy was the youngest of 5 kids. She grew up and spent her whole life loving San Diego and everything about it…the Padres, the weather, Sycuan Casino, and all her friends and family.
She wasn’t a huge fan of school but she was a proud Caver…San Diego High School class of ‘59. After high school, she went to Beauty School and started her 1st career as a hair dresser downtown. She became known for beautiful hair and hilarious jokes! After several years of cutting hair, one of her vendors hired her for her impressive sales skills. She could sell anything to anyone, and this began her second career in beauty retail. In the late 90s the store she was working for fell on hard times and Nancy was laid off. She took the opportunity to improve her office skills and she landed a job at San Diego City College as the front desk clerk in Health Services. She felt so blessed! This third career really was a blessing because she finally had a chance to earn her retirement pension.
Back in the early 70s when she was working downtown, she met a guy. She was head over heels for Marty Petersen who became her lifelong partner. Nancy and Marty did everything together, from attending Sunday church services, long rides in the country or parties and art museum exhibitions to hanging out for hours at the casino. Don’t know why they never married but they truly loved each other and took care of each other until Marty passed in 2015. Nancy was devastated but carried on.
Nothing could ever keep Nancy down. She loved Jesus and it showed. Always a smile on her face, a joke on her tongue and a song in her heart. Speaking of songs, even through her advanced dementia, Nancy kept the tune and knew the words of every movie musical, old Gene Autry style westerns and classic Christian hymns! She was always singing!
Nancy was preceded in death by her beloved Martin E. Petersen, her brothers, Richard and John and her sister, Dianna (all Sicklers). She leaves behind her brother, Irving (Betsy), several nieces, nephews and a few great nieces & nephews.
We will miss Nancy and the joy that she always shared with everyone but we’re all happy for her that she is finally HOME!
