Rey Fackrell, age 94, passed away peacefully on July 1, 2026 in San Diego, California, surrounded by his family.
Rey was born in San Diego, California, on October 4, 1931 to Howard and Lupe Fackrell. Rey grew up in San Diego where he remained throughout his life. He attended Grossmont High School, where he played both football and rugby, graduating in 1950. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree, followed by a Master of Arts degree.
Rey was the oldest of eight children. He was preceded in death by several of his siblings: Gloria Martin, Carlos Fackrell, Marla Johnson, Calvert Fackrell, and Deena Lee Broadbent. Rey is survived by his two brothers, Howard Fackrell and Lerl Fackrell.
In May 1951, Rey proudly enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving during the Korean War era. Much of his military service was spent at Moody Air Force Base in Valdosta, Georgia. He was honorably discharged in March 1955. In recognition of his faithful service, Rey received the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal, awarded for exemplary military conduct.
Rey served the San Diego Unified School District for 40 years as a teacher, both at the Junior High and High School levels. Rey enjoyed a distinguished teaching career at Patrick Henry High School and retired in 2000. Rey taught many subject areas while teaching with a special love for art. Rey also was able to use his bilingual skills to teach culturally diverse students. When retiring, Rey received from the San Diego Board of Education, commendation for his many contributions to the young people of San Diego.
Later in life, Rey met the love of his life, June Angel. They were married on November 30, 1973, and shared 45 wonderful years together until June’s passing in July 2017.
Rey had a lifelong love of travel and adventure. He enjoyed visiting Europe, attending several Summer Olympic Games, vacationing in Hawaii, and exploring many parts of the United States, especially the Midwest. He and his wife, June, also loved spending extended time in the beautiful California coastal communities of Monterey and Carmel. In his later years, Rey discovered the joy of cruising, traveling to destinations including Hawaii, Australia, the Caribbean, Mexico, and the Panama Canal.
Those who knew Rey will remember him as a kind, generous, and gentle man. He genuinely enjoyed people and never missed an opportunity to share a joke or brighten someone's day.
Later in life, through the influence of several close friends, Rey placed his faith in Jesus Christ. His relationship with the Lord became the foundation of his life. He faithfully attended church, participated in home Life Groups, and enjoyed attending church conferences. His legacy of loving God and loving others will continue to influence all who knew him.
Rey was preceded in death by his beloved wife, June; his oldest son, David Fackrell; and his stepson, David Angel.
He is survived by his sons, Mark Fackrell, James Fackrell, and Stephen Paul Fackrell; his stepson, Doug Angel; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and 11 step-great-grandchildren.
Rey was a devoted husband, a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend. He will be missed by all.
A graveside service with military honors will be held at Miramar National Cemetery on Friday, July 10 at 10:15 AM.
