Richard Coryell Mellien, age 91, of La Mesa, California, passed away on June 21, 2026. Richard was born on May 10, 1935, to Marie Coryell Mellien and Russell Gustave Horace Mellien. He lived a long and meaningful life, marked by love of family, quiet strength, and the many relationships he built over the years. He had a lifelong love of trains and a genuine love for people. Richard often said, “You just open your arms and embrace.” He was also a beloved teacher and dean for 40 years at Grossmont College, where he touched the lives of countless students and colleagues. His faith was central to his life, guiding him with hope, peace, and strength through every season. Those who knew him will remember him with gratitude and affection.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Arleen Cornell Mellien; and his daughter, Corinne Annette Grand. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Irene Klingman Mellien; his daughter, Kathleen Michelle San Filippo and her husband, Derek; his son-in-law, Steve Grand; and his stepchildren, John Mark Floyd and his wife, Lori, Marjorie Jean Burchett and her husband, Steve, Marie Jeanette Floyd and her husband, Anthony Creed, Deborah Lyn Velekei and her husband, Tom, Rebecca Ann Sundilson and her husband, Ethan, and David Robert Klingman and his wife, Hillary. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life will be held on July 25, 2026, at 11:30 a.m. at Foothills United Methodist Church in La Mesa.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Richard’s memory to the Cancer Research Institute or the Alzheimer’s Association. Richard will be deeply missed by his family and by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His loved ones take comfort in the memories they shared and in the hope and peace of God’s care.
