Listen to Obituary

Steven Allan Hable, 76, of El Cajon, CA, passed away on November 26, 2025.

Steve was born on June 19, 1949 in Willmar, MN to Myron and Francis Hable. He was raised in small-town Hector, MN alongside his older sister, Barb. He often relayed stories of agricultural work, small town school life, and the mischievous hijinks he was involved in - both with friends and alone. Steve was an avid Minnesota sports fan, enjoying two Twins World Series wins in his lifetime, though deeply frustrated by the Vikings’ failure to ever win a SuperBowl.

He married the love of his life Lori on May 5, 1984, in the living room of their home in Bloomington, MN. Together, they traveled the world, lived in several states before setting roots in East County San Diego, and growing their family. The two shared over 41 years of marriage filled with laughter and love - and strong drinks.

Steve worked within the mortgage industry after starting with Minnesota Title in the 70s. For over 50 years, he was known for his work ethic, mediation skills, and no nonsense approach. He never shied away from a challenging client or difficult projects, including the time that he was negotiating a contract and his opponent pulled out a gun.

Steve had a deep love for people, sharing his warmth, care, and compassion with all. He was the best champion for his family from being the greatest audience member in every performance to being the gentle guide for his children in any life decision or challenge. His positive presence was experienced with all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Steve was a steadfast ally and became a father figure to so many in the LGBTQ+ community. He had a strong faith in God and showed this through his devotion and service to Foothills United Methodist Church in various leadership roles, including Lay Leader for 17 years. As an ordained lay minister, Steve became involved with Kairos Prison Ministry, bringing love to prisoners at RJ Donovan Correctional Facility. He also had the pleasure and joy of officiating the marriage of his son Corey to Don LeMaster.

Steve will be remembered for his boisterous laughter, that one note he could sing in MacArthur Park, and shouts of HOORAY at any Don L performance in San Diego.

Steve is survived by his wife, Lori Hable, their children Stephanie Harshman (Seth) and Corey LeMaster-Hable (Don), his children Derek Hable (Cathy) and Nicole Cloud, whose mother is Nancy Morrissette, sister Barbara Kramer, and grandchildren Jacob (Bryndal), Katie, Aaron, Luke, Hanna, Peyton, Maddie, Kenny Jr, Nishiime, and great-grandson Jack.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A service to honor Steve’s life will be held on Saturday, January 17th at 11 am at Foothills United Methodist Church in La Mesa, CA with a reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to either Foothills United Methodist Church or Diversionary Theatre - both places Steve spent his time in fellowship with those he loved.

We love you, Steve, and are grateful for every laugh, every hug, and every moment.
