Thomas O. Narey, Sr., affectionately known to his family as “The Dude,” passed away on April 24, 2026, following heart surgery. He was 76 years old.
Born on January 13, 1950, Tom lived a life defined by humor, devotion to family and his Catholic faith, and an ability to make others feel at ease. An accountant by profession but a comedian at heart, he had a gift for finding laughter in everyday moments. He was known for his playful spirit and for giving nicknames to many people he met—his way of making each person feel special. True to form, he often joked that he wanted his gravestone to read, “I told you I was sick" and often referred to himself as a "former highly-trained athlete."
Tom shared 55 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Susan M. Narey, whom he enjoyed introducing as his "first wife". Together they built a close-knit family that remained the center of his world. He is survived by his wife Susan; his son Thomas O. Narey, Jr. and his wife Dr. Valerie Narey, along with their daughters Vivian, Alina, and Brielle; his son Michael S. Narey; his daughter Megan M. Sigler and her husband Stephen Sigler, along with their children Thatcher and Emma; his daughter Amanda M. Narey; and his daughter Samantha R. Cannuli and her husband Anthony Cannuli, along with their children Anthony, Sienna, Gabe, Sean, and Roman.
He is also survived by his siblings Charles Narey, Noreen Trutanich, Joyce Wolf, Donald Narey, and Marci Alesi, and was preceded in death by his sister Joanne Larson, and parents Joseph and Carmen Narey.
Tom found his greatest joy in time spent with his family. Whether he was on the golf course, relaxing with an occasional cigar and a glass of whiskey, or simply surrounded by those he loved, he embraced life with warmth and humor. His presence brought laughter, comfort, and connection to all who knew him.
A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 4, 2026, at Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcalá, followed by a burial service at Holy Cross Cemetery in San Diego, California.
Tom’s legacy is one of love, laughter, and the countless small moments that made life richer. In his memory, his family invites all who knew him to share a laugh, give someone a nickname, and carry forward the joy he so freely gave. In honor of Tom’s passing on Arbor Day, the family suggests planting a tree in his memory as a lasting tribute to his life and legacy. Flowers may also be sent through this site.
