Vernor “Vern” Cress was born on January 22, 1935 in Wichita, Kansas. He was the only child of Vernor and Madeline (Sturgeon) Cress. Although many knew him as Vern, many others knew him by his nickname “Speedy”.

     As a child, his family relocated from Kansas to the Los Angeles, area where he primarily grew up. One of his accomplishments was becoming an Eagle Scout. After graduating high school, he enlisted in the Navy and served 6 years, mostly stationed in Japan and doing trade schools for the military.

     After his discharge, Vern met and married the love of his life, Nancy (McCaughan) in 1960. They had two children: Kelly Marie and James Emerson, whom he loved dearly. He worked several skilled trades before entering the traffic signal business. In 1976, Vern and Nancy took a leap of faith and started his own company, Traffic Equipment and Lighting (TELCO). Later, in 1980, he founded Southwest Signal Service, where this included maintenance and construction of traffic signals and street lighting. Both of his children worked for him, and many of his employees were also considered family, for his company wasn’t just work, but giving glory to God.  

    Vern was a devoted man in every area of life, especially to his wife, children, company, family, friends, employees, church and especially to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

    Vern, a man of great faith and character, was always quietly helping and supporting those people and causes he believed in behind the scenes. 

     He was rather adventurous and loved his travels and life experiences. He enjoyed Indy Car racing, baking, baseball, especially the Padres, watching golf, church events, holidays, get togethers with family and friends and just having a good time.

    Vern was loved by all who knew him and he will be remembered always as a strong, honorable and faithful man of God.

    Vern passed away August 11, 2026 surrounded by his family and friends after courageously fighting multiple health ailments for many years without complaint. His family takes comfort knowing he is reunited with his wife and his Heavenly Father. He will be forever loved and missed.

     He is survived by his daughter Kelly Cole, son and daughter in law James and Rebecca Cress, grandson Mark Cole, granddaughter Renee (Harley) Leibowitz, and great grandchildren Rocco and Estelle Leibowitz.
