William “Bill” Frances Bartman passed away peacefully at his home in San Diego, near Balboa Park. A lifelong San Diego resident, Bill will be remembered for his love of family, teaching, athletics, and adventure.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Irina, and his brothers Tom of San Diego and John of Crystal River, Florida. Bill has a large extended family including Nieces; Tyla Kelly, Kelly Hodge, And Kristy McClaskey of San Diego. Nephews ; Steven Bartman , Ryan Bartman of Arizona . Niece Mary Laughlin of Arizona.

A proud graduate of Crawford High School and a natural athlete, Bill participated in track and field as well as wrestling. After high school, he continued his education, graduating from San Diego State University and the ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, California. He later earned his teaching credentials from the USC Graduate School.

Following graduation, Bill taught and coached at several schools. A visit to the U.S. Virgin Islands inspired him to settle in St. Croix, where he spent two years teaching and coaching before returning to California. He then dedicated more than 35 years to the San Diego Unified School District. Over time, he found his true calling in special education, where his patience, humor, and compassion touched the lives of countless students. Even in retirement, Bill continued to serve as a substitute teacher, always eager to make a difference.

Bill and Irina shared a deep love of travel. Together, they spent extended stays at their condominium in St. Petersburg, Russia, and enjoyed relaxing months at their beach home in San Felipe, Mexico. Wherever they went, Bill’s curiosity, warmth, and kindness left a lasting impression on everyone he met.

A true San Diegan, Bill cherished his neighborhood near Balboa Park and the San Diego Zoo. He lived life on his own terms—independent, thoughtful, and loyal to those he loved. Bill will be deeply missed and forever remembered by his family and many friends.
